Yes, thanks Bill.

Here is another definition:

First of all, infographics and data visualizations are different animals. Infographics are best for visual storytelling and can sum up bite-size amounts of data in a quick, easy, compelling way. They require less time to create, but can be effective. Data visualizations, on the other hand, are useful for showing patterns in data. It requires more from the user as far as data sifting, cleaning and analyzing, but can also tell effective stories.

Good question, I like to make the following distinction:

While both are visualizations, Infographics are static graphical informational articles.  http://bit.ly/TI5Zqh

On the other hand, Advanced Visual Analytics entails the interactive discovery of trends, patterns and relationships in the data.  http://bit.ly/TI5Zqh

Can someone explain the distinction between an infographic and a data visualization?

Interesting ... of course, my daughter's "data visualization" appears solely in the video games she plays on my wife's iPAD.-/  She does, however, know DATA STEP terminology (at age 8.-)

LEADERS FROM THE BUSINESS AND IT COMMUNITIES DUEL OVER CRITICAL TECHNOLOGY ISSUES

The Current Discussion

Visual Analytics: Who Carries the Onus?
The Issue: Data visualization is an up-and-coming technology for businesses that want to deliver analytical results in a visual way, enabling analysts the ability to spot patterns more easily and business users to absorb the insight at a glance and better understand what questions to ask of the data. But does it make more sense to train everybody to handle the visualization mandate or bring on visualization expertise? Our experts are divided on the question.
The Speakers: Hyoun Park, Principal Analyst, Nucleus Research; Jonathan Schwabish, US Economist & Data Visualizer

No doubt your enterprise is amassing loads of data for fact-based decision-making. Hand in hand with all that data comes big computational requirements. Can traditional IT infrastructure handle the increasing number and complexity of your analytical work? Probably not, which is why you need a backend rethink. Big data calls for a high-performance analytics infrastructure, as Fern Halper, a partner at the IT consulting and research firm, Hurwitz & Associates, discusses here.
