Evolution of the Data Scientist Role

In the years since data scientist was declared the sexiest job, the role itself has evolved. As happens with any job, hiring managers have been adjusting their expectations for data science candidates, and executives are defining the role of the data scientist in ways that meet the needs of their organizations.

Many organizations have abandoned the "unicorn" concept, which imposed so many technical and business requirements on the "ideal candidate" that said candidate could have been hired as a god. Some organizations are casting two people -- one with strong business skills and one with deep technical skills -- as a data science team. Others have embarked on internal training programs, to build technical skills in business managers and business skills in technologists.

John Reed, senior executive director for recruiting firm Robert Half Technology, has been monitoring the data scientist job market, and will be discussing the changes that he has seen in the data scientist role. Reed visits All Analytics Radio at 1 pm (ET) on Thursday, March 23, to share his insight into what employers are looking for, how data scientists fit into an organization, and, of course, what data scientists can expect to earn.

Whether you are a data scientist in your own right, striving to become one, or working to hire one, tune in to our interview with John Reed to learn more about the evolution of the data scientist role.
