NO RATINGS

They key is looking and sounding busy. Typing loudly on your keyboard, even if all you're doing is IM'ing with friends. Walk around the office quickly, even if all you're doing is walking from the coffee machine to the bathroom and back. Carry a laptop or a tablet, preferably tapping away as you walk. Then you'll be professional (looking).

How do you define unprofessional Maryam? Flip flops? Bra straps? And what about the women? Ha ha. just kidding.

NO RATINGS

I am a results oriented individual and I don't like to babysit employees. If their job is getting done and they are not doing anything unprofessional, I really don't pay much attention.

I understand you need to either get stuff done or maybe getting the score for the game from last night, but I think some of these people take advantage of the system.  I agree as long as you get the job done, but at some jobs that you need to focus your attendtion to the customers, then I have an issue with that.

Me too--but sometimes it is hard to overlook aggregiously inappropriate clothing worn primarily by young women. Perhaps because I'm a mom...

I try not to pay attention to what employees are doing, unless it is something that causes a saftey or security issue.  As long as they get the job done.

I remember as a young adult, I got an award for being the number one sales rep for the month, and a verbal talking to for being the one who sent the most personal emails.  I couldn't help but be proud of both.

@frankcastle74 ...well said. I find it very frustrating when I'm having an especially busy day -- and look over to see a colleague surfing Victoria's Secret or ESPN!

NO RATINGS

I used to work for a cable company as a tech support rep, we spend our day on the phone helping customers.  I know that in between calls we go on the internet and surf, sometimes I see other co-workers would surf when they are with a customer.  I know that before I left there, they were starting to monitor screen shots so they know what the employees were doing.  I know that is going a bit much but I also can understand from a business owner's point of view.  They don't want to pay someone that is not productive, I understand breaks but not when the breaks takes almost have of your day.  They have jobs like that, it's call part-time.

I have no problems with casual attire. Unfortunately, and I this may come off as gender biased, I think casual dress can backfire on women more than men--especially when they show up at the office in a low-cut tank shirt, really tight jeans and flip-flops. That's not comfortable...for the rest of us in the office, anyway!
