Technology is wonderful (and broken at the same time), but it's not the key factor in the success of big-data projects. People still are, so I agree with 3 of 4 A2 readers - the statement is FALSE.

No fooling either. (See, it's April first and the topic... ah, skip it. Happy April 1st everyone. )

Technology can be an obstacle; it's true. But, I'd select FALSE in this case. The biggest hurdle, or read as Up-Front-Effort, is in the definition of data elements, their meaning and their source. You can come to find information you've been working with for years has been transformed somewhere down the line. The hurdle is keeping it consistent and clearly defined.

I would have to say politics and cost are the biggest roadblocks

And I would add that it's not just a mattering of allocating resources, but making sure that everybody knows the value of using data in decision making. Even in they're not hands-on with the data, everybody should understand why it's important.

I agree, Beth. My father-in-law (God rest his soul), an economist, once told me how they did regressions in college. They had to line up and then get the results after some hours. I could imagine how hard it would be to ask companies to use analytics when the tools lag behind like that. Today, the right tools are there; what we need to do is to allocate resources to maximize them for the organization.

Having just written about how automated some advanced analytics tools have become, I can't help but to think the only answer to this is "False" (see Automate Analytics, But Don't Forget Your Basics). The technology is available. The organizational know-how to take value from the data? Now that's often another matter.
