@Terry. I think one of the problems with dashboards, including Omniture, is that the interfaces are developed by people who already know the system for those same people who already know their way around the system.

I think a dashboard developer has to focus on the needs of the uninitiated business user. The system always can allow people to dig deeper and craft their own complex queries. However, if the average business user looks at the interface and the data and has to ask, "What the heck am I seeing and how do I get what I need?" someone screwed up.

A typical flaw in dashboard design -- in fact in many development efforts such as training docs -- is the use of terms that sound good and advanced (hype!) but mean nothing to the average person.

Developers and data scientists have to keep their focus on the target audience in these cases, and carefully define the business user's needs, understanding, and abilities.

Let me also raise the bloody axe to go after the clunkiest of dashboards for online publishing: Omniture (just writing the name makes my brain hurt). While it's highly functional and sophisticated, there isn't much about Omniture that is intuitive or encourages users to play with dashboardor customize it.

For its part, the vendor chimes in with "Buy our ridiculously expensive and time consuming training programs." Not helpful at all.

In online publishing, we're most concerned with page views and click-throughs and downloads. So something that breaks that down in a highly customizable way is critical, since sales has very different wants from a dashboard than editorial or marketing.

Where are we finding that Digital Dashboards are most applicable in your projects? What types of implementations?
