Not just traders! Even in an age of anayltics and big data, trusting one's gut is still very much alive for decisionmakers at the world's largest businesses.

@bulk if you pick a team, assume that it'll lose and then pick another team, which one actually loses? :)

A lot of stock market investors still rely on that elusive "gut feel" when they can simply balance their portfolios using math.

Exactly, Maryam! The human element in sports reduces analytics to little more than probability values. If x, then y% we'll get z.  The weather, the health and mood of the athlete(s) and probably 75 other variables and unknowns make this an educated guessing game. And that educated guessing has its place in numbers-driven team sports. I know the topic in front of us is sports betting, but aren't companies essentially betting on educated guesses with many of their analytics-led decisions?

Without getting too vauge, the purpose I see in the cartoon is that trends aren't everything. What the data shows and what we expect can always be turned on its head, often with no identifiable cause.

Human behavior is probably the most difficult to predict the variables are endless.

It's like trying to predict who will have the most MOST perfect conditions to win on a given day - IMPOSSIBLE

@Maryam, Sometimes that is just the way of things. We cant predict everything, though we wish we could.
