Excellent discussion ... especially for us politics nerds.  Good info — such as referrals to 2 sites I hadn't been aware of:

http://electionanalytics.cs.illinois.edu/election12/index.html

http://www.blue2012red.xpatterns.com/

For the record, 2 of my comments in the discussion got "eaten" and never appeared.  But life went on...

I can already feel the outcome: The winner of the popular vote will not win the Electoral College and there will be a major discussion (again) about the process we use to elect presidents in this country.

The probability of that may not be so high ... but the possibility of a tie in electoral votes may be higher.

Rachel Maddow discussed this and other possibilities on her MSNBC program the other night.  These include the possibility of Boehner becoming president (don't ask) and the even weirder possibility of Romney becoming president and Biden VP.

Ah, the delights of the electoral college system...

Nate Silver at FiveThirtyEight is presently predicting only just better than a seven percent chance of that happening (run over thousands of simulations).

But yes, the race looks as if it will be quite close.

@Hospice, let's wait to see if the Supreme Court gets involved in this election (a la 2000) before we decide if democracy still "works fine" in this country. Or if Ohio or Florida decides the election through the "effective" electoral system.

@PC- I won't be surprise if half of the voters made the wrong choice. But they will have to assume that choice until the next election. One thing all the voters will agree on is that "democracy still works fine in the country".

@Maryam, people will associate all sorts of things to the presidential victory -- some serious but some, like the Halloween masks, not so much. At least it gets folks talking (if not focused on the issues, though).

@Beth - yes, I'm a big risk-taker.  Among data stewards.

PC, that's a pretty precarious perch you've placed yourself on.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict that after November 6th, about half the voters will be unhappy with the selection of our president.
