I'm guessing this manager maybe could have used some management training too -- like how not to gloss over or soft-pedal poor performance results!

Hi Tricia -- wow, who knew such thought had to go into picking not just a color but a shade. Funny, I find the Red more business like, I guess -- more in keeping with the traffic light red, yellow (or amber), and green often used in alerts dashboards, etc. IndianRed seems too stylish a choice, in a way!

Excellent point Beth.  

You really have to chose one way you are going - either highlight what is going well or what is not going well. Generally it seems like mangers want to see the red (poorly performning) areas first.  

One funny that happened to me - one manager I worked with thought the red color I had picked was too harsh.  We had a half-hour meeting trying out several shades of red until we found one that wasn't too "judgemental".   We finally agreed on Indian Red.

Here's the difference with the Hex code listed:

Color Name

Red - # FF0000

Color Name

IndianRed - # CD5C5C

 

Since it was the only color on the page - I think probably any color would have communicated the point.

I think a splash of color definitely helps not only to liven up otherwise grey reports but also to direct the eye to the pertinent pieces of data. The problem comes in when the former motivation outweighs the latter!
