I find it gets even worse when you start to talk about mobile solutions. If they don't know how it works on the desktop, there is less hope for the mobile devices.

Sadly Beth I think the only easy part is that the letter I appears in BI and IT. ;-)

Tom, to add to your point, most get confused by what the vendor has told them.  Sometimes general skill is worth more than specific knowledge of a tool.  But the industry may be so tool saturated that companies may not realize what solutions outside of what's in front of them is possible.

Hence a good reason to use BI to derive a value proposition for the IT infrastructure! (If only it were so easy, right?)

I am almost certain you will find that most companies do not understand their BI or IT infrastructure. Ut typically is a cost center not a profit center, so getting budget will always be a fight.
