The company was smart, in that regard. They knew Harvey was leaving in June, so they brought me on-board in January. I'd heard that they learned this lesson the hard way.

It's interesting, though, that knowledge transfer comes into play when outsourcing analytics. I'd imagine there may be some quirks to the database structure that need to be explained, but isn't the whole point for the outsourcer to deliver value, rather than receive a lot of the client's IP?

Hi Michael, interesting background story. It sounds like you had access to Harvey? That was lucky for the company.

This necessity of assuring knowledge transfer came up, too, during our radio episode on outsourcing analytics. Companies engaging outsourcers for analytics must be sure to account for intellectual property and knowledge transfer in the contracts they build with these partners.

No argument here. Documentation is critical at every phase. I've told the story before, but I actually served 3 months as a freelance tech writer documenting an app that one member of a workgroup wrote. He was relocating to the UK, and his app was operating on a virtual server outside IT's control. (Shadow IT before it was a thing.) Now that IT was taking over, the app -- known only as "Harvey's Tool" -- needed a proper user manual and code documentation. It was a valuable learning experience, if nothing else.

I would have to say that Sarah hits a crucial point in this video blog: that of spreading tribal knowledge. The last thing a small company with limited analytics staff should want to happen is having its analytics expertise disappear because one person moves on to another organization! The same goes for a large company, but the applicability here would more likely be on a project basis.
