@Beth, they have been closing post offices in my area and consolidating. Given the financial state of the USPS, they have to do something. I just hope they are using some sort logic behind it.

"If" is right. I never fail to be surprised by the traffic at my local Post Office, though -- still, I would bet that as lease periods end, the Postal Service is using analytics to determine whether to close branches or, as personnel retire, hire new staff. In my area, I know of two branches on the same major street within a five-minute drive from each other. One is a two-teller facility manned for the last couple of years by just one teller. The other is larger, and while I don't frequent it often from my visit there last week I'd say it's staffed by 4 or so tellers but the facility was built with windows for probably twice as many clerks (I didn't count exactly). I don't know the behind-the-scenes operations of either, but I wouldn't be surprised to see consolidation in the future.

@Beth, probably you can look at ZIP codes with low Internet access and know exactly which post offices will be busy. If the USPS were smart, it would model this customer demand tsunami and prepare for it. If ...

Back in the old days, I lived relatively close to the main Post Office in downtown Chicago. I recall long lines of cars on tax deadline day -- with Postal workers stationed outside to collect the forms from the drivers. That was a sensible approach in the day, and pretty good customer service when you think about it. I wonder if that still happens today -- certainly the procrastinators are still out there, but with electronic filing now so prevalent I wonder if that midnight drop-off service is still required.

I think we should have expected the Government to lag painfully behind the private sector in it's recruitment of Dat Scientist type talent.
The only answer to this IMO is money - pay enough and they will come.

@Beth, that sounds almost like a downright good experience at the Post Office. Try going to that post office on 4/15 and get something done ... or any time in December!

Hi Broadway -- well then, your father would not have liked my experience of this morning -- although it did go better than it might have. I went to the Passport Acceptance Facility at a nearby Post Office, arriving at 10 o'clock almost on the dot per the hours posted on the web and on the facility's front door. However, upon getting in line, I learned that the Passport authority didn't actually start till 10:30, so I had to wait, along with a couple of others who also were surprised by the discrepancy in hours posted and actual.
On the plus side, one nice postal clerk volunteered to give a cursory look over people's applications to make sure all the paperwork was in order so the process would be smoother when the real Passport worker showed up. (There were no "regular" patrons to serve at the time.) This benefitted the person in front of me, for example, as she had to get one of the documents photocopied -- which meant walking to the nearest photocopy machine, located at a currency exchange, across street and down a block. Not such a big deal, except I did feel bad for her as she had a toddler and a newborn in tow. I had to wonder why the Postal Service didn't add a copy machine to the facility -- this one is plenty spacious -- especially as it probably deals with patrons needing to copy Passport and other documents on a fairly regular basis. That would have been smart, and could even have brought in some extra money for the station.
As it turned out, the Postal clerk who could process Passports even opened her station about 10 or so minutes early, so I was glad I decided to wait and not leave and return -- especially since the line was about eight people deep by the time I finished with my order.

Indeed, my pop knows the geography and knows enough about Crimean history to not understand what the big deal is --- but that's neither here nor there. His problem is when he walks into the Social Security or USPS office and has to wait 30 minutes to be served. He is not a patient man!
