You hit on one of Raithel's major points today, kq4ym -- being able to claim a broad and diverse range of SAS project skills. He said one of the best ways to get that experience is to volunteer and help other teams, going above and beyond the job description to secure a 'go-to SAS guy' reputation.

I missed the live presentation today but hope to catch the playback later. I'd be curious to know also if programmers primarily want to learn for their current projects or want to be known as a "star" and able to handle broad tasks. Given a "star" status I would think the salary would be a big draw as incentive to become the top gun and wonder how competitive that top level might be.

We do always seem to circle back to the importance of being able to communicate with others about work -- and with good reason. And, as we learned in the show, that is indeed critical. Being a top SAS programmer, it seems, entails a lot of self-promotion and getting yourself out there to establish expertise.

Sounds like a plan. I'd imagine there's a fair amount of business domain and communication skill-building also necessary in order to rise in the ranks, but I guess that depends on a programmer's career trajectory of choice.

Hi Michael, I see this a session providing a lot of great practical advice and guidance on how to turn basic skills into superstar status. While some of this will apply to coding mastery, I would presume a lot of Raithel's tips do involve hard work and diligence to build an understanding of the SAS environment, to really dig in, be ambitious, and be a self-advocate. We'll learn more this afternoon.

This sounds like it'll be a very valuable session, Beth. Do you think Raithel will present 'secret' tips and tricks that SAS superstars use, or is it primarily about hard work and diligence?
