I agree with both of you.  It will not be easy and by no means trivial to make things work.  Worse part is what works today may stop working tomorrow (I found this all the time when I worked at Zynga).  But it does mean that it is not worthwhile trying.  It is important to pick your battles.

I don't algorithms will replace people for a long-time.  However, many insights from a data expert can be generalized and automated by an algorithm.

Yep, it's all much easier said than done. It's a challenge to not only identify "less precise" technologies as being so, but to not let our wishes and hopes make in our minds the data from those more useful than they really are.

And you're sure I liked that because?

Thanks for finally getting down to specifics and mentioning recommendation engines, Rich. If vendors did nothing but concentrate their Big Data efforts here, it would be money and time well spent. I'm underwhelmed (and often incredibly amused) by Amazon, Netflix, eBay and others pushing me toward my next purchase ("If you liked that, you'll love this!" NO.)

@Jamescon, if the marketing effort is based in inaccurate data, such as weather forecast, it may not be as impactful as envisioned. Notably, pricing. During panic buying the seller dictates, but if he prices and stocks for panic and events don't pan out as projected, you can guess the pain. So my point was to be on guard for the pitfalls that can arise from the interdependencies with lesser precise technologies.

@rbaz. Retailers promoting gloves a couple of days before a winter storm shouldn't bother most people. Even if the forecast is wrong and it doesn't snow, now you have a good pair of gloves. It's not like they cancel school or work based on a flawed two-day forecast. Of course, I live in New England where you better have gloves on hand by October because you know you will need them soon. (And, snow forecasts still cause panic shopping. I guess humans are just like that.)

I agree that it is easy to miss. Also many of the plans I have seen are ill conceived and rather than help consumers, become a source of irritation. As we mature in application, I expect things to get better, but for now there seem to be more misses than hits.

The convergence of many technologies that the article refers as a definition of big data, also carries along an interdependency which may have its drawbacks. For example, the case of selling gloves two days before a storm is good if weather forecasting is accurate. Not all technologies advance in sync.
