@kq4ym. I think this time it's Google using the stick, not the carrot, in trying to persuade advertisers and websites to be mobile friendly. If organizations don't comply they risk not getting prime exposure. At least that's how I read things.

For some years now, Google has been not so gently trying to pursuade it's Adsense publishers to convert websites to mobile friendly formats. They've encouraged publishers to change with given statistics of the growing move to mobile. It might be questioned if Google is using the stick or the carrot in it's march to mobile.

It would be great to have websites on mobile with a good user friendly interface like you describe Jim. Many have already adopted to new and easy to navigate formats. Google's new strategy would mean that many more would follow. People are on the move in this overly busy work environment. Most only have time to browse through sites while traveling to and from work or other engagements. So this is the future that Google is planning for today.

There a few software applications out there such as Adobe Indesign that make it easy to build a website that will automatically sort itself out to look it's best on a multitude of devices. Having to build multiple sites is no longer necessary.

Apple has struck a balance between making computers (which they successful expanded to tablets (iPad), music players (iPod), and now watches (Watch). I'm not sure how well they've build a developer community like Google, but you are so right about the software being valuable. Microsoft is still in a catch up mode in some ways, and that bothers me a bit.

I think Apple is now more of a software copany than hardware. Their OS is more advanced than Microsoft ( who is a software company) and the IOS is one of the key differentiators. I would not say they don't have the capability.

I also think that Yahoo study is telling - the idea that people are starting to go back and forth between screens means a business has potential to deliver useful content in two distinct ways. That potential is also at the heart of the responsive design debate with designers.

It's a good question - Google had bought Motorola for their mobile phone capability only to sell them within 2 years to Lenovo. They seem to be making headway with providing "content" rather than hardware. Doing so lets their competitors deal with another competitor ie Apple vs Samsung, rather than needless create a threeway that would have them majorly compete with Samsung in the device department. Having minor entries like Nexus and Chromebook may be just enough.

I've seen some sites and software apps that were well designed for mobile. They can still have all the content, but it is made available in what I would call tiers, called up when you need it. So, something like a corporate HR or financial app would present a user with a menu of the tasks or information sources that are available to them based on their role, and navigation is task based (walking you through the steps needed).
On a consumer-facing website that design might leave you with a half dozen icons (along the lines of "find a store" "special deals" "provide feedback" "customer service"). The product catalog and everything else that you see on a more traditional website are still there and would be indexed by Google. But the simplistic design hides the complexity.

Does Google need to build great hardware as long as it can get partners to do it? Apple was a hardware company from the start. While Apple has done fairly basic software (all hardware companies have to do that, if only for the purpose of ensuring interfaces, management, and user experience) few software companies have been successful building their own hardware. It's a case of do what you do well, and know people who can do the rest.
