I seem to remember from decades ago the disadvantage/advantage claimed for black listing the cost factor for ink and the computer screen refresh rate as I recall for the black/white. I think I remember something too about the best colors for visibility and I believe it was actually yellow background with black print and graphics. Hence, our familiar street road warning signs and the "yellow pages" phone book of the past.

I don't disagree about the black pixel/energy piece or the printing costs associated with black. But for me, the map is easier to read against a black background; I also think it pops more, visually. Now if the rest of Seth's page also had a black background and he'd reversed the type to appear in white, I might have a different opinion. But that one element works really against the black, imho.
