I think this illustrates that some kind of regulation or guideline is needed so there is a unifrom way to either get permission or inform someone before they sign up for a service.

I wonder if marketing figures there's nothing wroing with collecting data from a user's computer or they thought no one would mind, or that no one would find out. It would be interesting to attend the meetings on that decision.

However, I like what the video had to say.  Now many companies are talking about listening to their customers and text analysis, but eventually they got to the point where they could respond to quality control issues in weeks rather than months and that is a real concrete benefit.

I agree. And 25 million customer inputs is definitely Big Data. Good testimonial for SAS and its data viz capabilities.

@ tomsg, That is a mistake that will leave a stain on Lenovo's reputation for some time.  I bet someone over there had their head in their  hands thinking "I really wish we hadn't had done that."

I think that what lenovo is doing is really a great idea. The issue I have is that while analytics can really make a difference in finding and resolving problems, it can  not correct a corporate culture gone wrong. The scheme Lenonvo was involved in had them modifying the windows programs that were shipping with their products to collect user data ( such as what they were buying online) and using it as a revenue stream. This clearly violates a number of privacy issues and I do not believe the revenue they achieved could possiby have paid for the bad publicity. I think you need to get the corporate culture right beofre analytics can really help drive the business.
