@Joe with the bad rep that sugar is getting today, we probably need to establish AA style support groups. Then we will get the chance to say, "Hi, my name is __, and I'm a sugarholic" to get encouragement and praise when we say, "I haven't touched any sugar in 3 months now." Maybe we can also give out sugarfree chips or medals or whatever they use in AA.

@Seth: Being more specific, not cane sugar but high fructose corn syrup.

You can thank the farming/agriculture lobbyists for that.

We might be a healthier nation if the Iowa caucuses happened toward the end of the state primaries and a state like,say, Rhode Island voted first!

@kq4ym: The most eye-opening but counterintuitive realization for me was the notion that what we take in converts to someething else in our bodies.

Hence, saturated animal fats are good, cholesterol is actually fine, and certain carbs are bad because they convert to fat and cholesterol!

@Ariella: I've experienced that firsthand.

Nowadays I drink diet soda -- and in moderation (only for the moderate amt of caffeine). But the first time I tried to quit sweetened soda I was also quitting almost all added-sugar sweets period.

Then I tried a soda (a sugared one) for the first time in months. It tasted awful and extra sugary. I figured I just got a bad can. So I took another one. That one was bad too.

I realized my sense of taste had changed and I couldn't tolerate that load of sugar any more.

Eventually, I backslid...but now I haven't touched a drop of sugared soda in a long time. :)

For me, I've also found that sugar or rather the taste of sweetness has an almost addictive quality.  Not so much the craving part but I've found that the more sugar I use, the more I get used to the taste and there require more of it to taste the same sweetness.  So I found myself using more sugar or even non-calorie sweetener.   So now instead I give myself sweetness breaks.

Its true its the curse of processed food add salt to the mix as well. Its best to east low to the ground with fresh fruits and vegetable and meats. The sugar addiction is hard to break I started limiting sugar about 20 years ago and it has really helped in all aspects of my health! I think if we did an analysis of process foods over the years the results would be frightening!

@ Ariella.  Added sugar to food here in the U.S. is pretty much a crises.   It's close to 80% of all food products here in the U.S. have sugar added to them.   I specifically buy brands I know that don't have sugar added to them.   Often there is so much sugar that you really can't taste the orignal product but only the sugar.

Kq4ym, there are certain health maxims that we all thought we could take to our graves, but even those have taken hits as of late --- like low fat being better than high fat, or losing weight simply being a matter of taking in less calories than you burn.

Joe me too, my family loves Thanksgiving Turkey but I am completely open to new things the last few years I have been going away for Easter and enjoying different areas and different experiences. To the point of some here its great to go native a few years ago we were in San Francisco and had crabs overlooking the bay for Easter lunch and strolled through Chinatown and stopped for a Chinese dinner in the evening. It was about being together and experiencing the place where we were!

@Joe soon we'll find ourselves trading recipes here! It is possible to develop a taste for less sweetness. Even before I started trying to cut back on sugar, I tended to find certain things too sweet -- like full strength orange juice -- and would dilute it. I worked on acquiring a taste for unsweetened cranberry juice. It is very sour but I dilute that, too.
